WHEN TO MAKE A REFERRAL TO A COUNSELLOR
• When the situation is beyond your capacity to help at this
time. You may feel limited in
your knowledge of the
situation, be struggling with a similar issue, or not have
the
energy to give at this time.
• When your relationship with the person is strained,
lacking in trust or a personality
difference is in the way.
• When the situation could lead to deeper discussion which
will affect the professional
(working) relationship you have
with the person.
• When you have contact with the person which might impair
your ability to be unbiased -
particularly when the person
is under your supervision, employment, or otherwise
obliged
to you.
• When you cannot make the necessary time available in order
to help.
• When you have reason to believe your help has not been
effective.
• When the person is reluctant to discuss the situation with
you for some reason.
