HOW TO MAKE A REFERRAL

When making a referral, be clear why you are recommending counselling. State your observations of the individual's behaviour - tell them what you have seen and heard.

Let the individual know that you support them in their desire to seek help. Assure them that trained counsellors work with individuals with a wide range of concerns (such as relationships, stress, careers, spirituality, depression, parenting, anxiety). Professional counselling will be confidential, safe, and helpful.

The situation need not reach crisis proportions for an individual to benefit from professional counselling. It can be easier to work on a situation when addressed before it reaches a crisis level.

While it is best to be honest about your reasons for recommending counselling the option must be left for the person to accept or refuse a counselling referral.
